Because he was not on the 1911 census in the Dodd household as he was in 1901, I thought that he may have married and then there was the farming connection. But what is more puzzling is that I canīt find a birth record for him either.

Are you tracing the family of John Dodds and Sarah Patterson forwards? or trying to trace back from the James Dodds who married Martha Cousins?

Starting with John Dodds and Sarah Jane Patterson's family- the following children are listed in 1901:
James (39)- born c1862
Bella (28)- born c1873 (39 in 1911)
Sarah Jane (26)- born c1875 (26 in 1911)
Ellen (22)- born c1879 (32 in 1911)
David P (20)- born c1881 (30 in 1911)

The LDS website has some extracted Irish births 1864 (start of civil registration) to c1880. According to the census James was born before the start of birth registration which is why you will not find a birth registration for him anywhere.

Same family in 1911-
www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1911/Down/Ballybrick/Ballybrick/208990

Since there's a gap of about 11 years between James and Bella either there could have been other siblings or perhaps James' father John Dodds was married more than once.

Added- possible marriage for John Dodds, son of James, and Sarah Jane Patterson was 1860 Co. Down.

"Probate of the Will of John Dodds late of Ballybrick County Down Farmer who died 28 January 1909 granted at Belfast to John Martin and David Patterson Dodds Farmers." See www.proni.gov.uk
Will mentions son David Patterson Dodds, daughters Isabella, Sarah Jane and Ellen, son Samuel and daughter Margaret. James Doods is not mentioned but if he was still alive there could be several reasons for this omission such as John was only making provision for unmarried children and the clause restricting David from marriage whilst mother still alive might also have a bearing on this.

Many thanks for the information, I hadnīt realised about the civil registration, as BMD UK starts at 1837. Also I didnīt know about Margaret named in Johnīs will, but have managed to trace her birth to 1863, and didnīt know about the will calenders at Proni, which may be a great help as am tracing back both mine and my husbands families and three quarters of my husbands family are of Irish descent.

Hi lynnmurray,

The two family names struck a cord with me. My gr gr grandmother was Agnes Patterson (b.1855). Her father was William Patterson and was married to an Agnes Dodds (her father James Dodds). My gr gr grandmother had a brother James (b.1849)  and sister Isabella (b.1857). William Patterson's sister was also called Isabella.

They also came from around that part of County Down.

Maybe some connection there?

Regards
Terry
