Borstal or School?
« on: Monday 16 April 12 09:28 BST (UK) »
I have a relative, George Keeble b1884 in Stratford London. In the 1891 census he is back with his Mother in her birthplace, Colchester. His Father died in 1897 and in the 1901 census he is listed as an 'Inmate' at an establishnent in Thorndon, Suffolk. There are about 30 other boys of the same age, but the first guy is 35 years old and is listed as a Shoemaker.
Does anyone know if this was a detention centre or an Industrial type school?
The address is Thorndon all Saints  Thorndon  Suffolk.

It's Kerrison Reformatory School!

See: http://thorndon.onesuffolk.net/history-of-thorndon-suffolk/kerrison-reformatory-school/

The previous page of the census shows Frederick Gill as Superintendent, and his wife Agnes as Matron

Thank you for that. I should have checked that myself. Thanks again.
