Charles Kennedy m Maria Reilly/Dunlavin/Roundtown/Rathmines
« on: Tuesday 17 April 12 00:57 BST (UK) »
I'm trying to locate information on Charles Kennedy who married Maria Reilly c1858 and were noted on the 1901 census in Rathmines.  They were apparently originally from Dunlavin, Co Wicklow and in 1863 lived in The Quarrie, Roundtown (Terenure).
Five of their children are in baptismal records for Rathfarnham/Terenure and it is entirely possible that the elder two, Peter and Martha may have been born in Dunlavin.
I'm looking for suggestions on how I might trace them to an area of Dunlavin and possibly their parents' information...hope someone can help!

here's the 1901 census for this family for reference

 Kennedy household, Church place, Rathmines

(Charles age has been transcribed as 40, but should be 60.)

RC records for Dunlavin are available in the National Library on microfilm    Pos. 6484. The baptism records go back to 1815, marriages to 1831. Some sections of the registers are badly faded and difficult to read - particularly the marriages.

I had a quick look at the free index search on RootsIreland and there are possible matches that might be worth checking. A baptism of a child with the initial M to a Charles Kennedy and Mary/Maria Reilly, and a possible marriage for them in the same parish in 1858.

Note an RC marriage from this time may not include much details - i.e. date of marriage, names of bride and groom, names of two witnesses, and possibly basic addresses for the couple, and name of the priest

Banana, thanks for the book suggestion...will follow up on it.

Shane, thanks again for coming up trumps with possibilities.  Are you saying that the ref number in the National Library is 6484?  Haven't been in there yet to check anything so am  very much a novice!

Pos. 6484 is the microfilm roll that has images of the Dunlavin RC parish register. Often registers have certain details written in Latin (Christian name, notes and sometimes dates) - so if you are going to view these, it's an idea to have a list of names in Latin and English to check against.

There is only one family of Kennedy's listed on Griffiths for Dunlavin

http://www.failteromhat.com/griffiths/wicklow/dunlavin.htm

Of course Charles may not have come from a farming family but it may help narrow a search in Dunlavin.

Thanks Tara.  I was in the National Library today and found the marriage record for Charles and Maria in November 1858.  His father is listed as Patrick - the same name as you found on Griffiths.  However his address is listed as what looks like "Toon" and Maria's as Ballymaney or Ballymoney.    Their witnesses were a Thomas Broughal of Broughal's Hill and Bridget Jones of Donard.
I know that some areas starting with "Tour" eg Tournafulla, are often called Toor locally so I wonder if this could be the case here?
Would love some help on this if anyone knows the area at all
