German POW Camps in Northamptonshire
« on: Tuesday 17 April 12 16:59 BST (UK) »
I am trying to find out information about a german POW who was held in Northamptonshire after the war.  He was either in Barby POW camp or Byfield.  He remained in England after the war for the rest of his life.
Are these records (if any) kept locally to Northampton or are they at the National Archives (or both)
I'm not young enough to know everything.

I believe that individual German POW Records were sent to Germany.
T.N.A. Hold Camp Records for Barby and Byfield. Both Camps were located near Rugby in Warwickshire.

FO 939/167 is the File for 87 Working Camp Byfield.1945-48.          WO 939/327 is 1005 Working Camp Barby.
Never looked at the Files myself.

Thank you.  I was rather hoping they would be in Northampton.

WW2 German POWs Records are kept at
Deutsche Dienstelle (WASt)
Postfach 51 06 57
D-13400 Berlin
Germany

Be prepared for a wait but they are usually on the ball if they have your mans records. Be sure to use their e-mail address for tracing people and don't forget to include your name and address.
