I am trying to trace my Great Grandfather Edward Bell.  He was born in Carlisle ABT 1842.  His father was John Bell and his Mother was  Elizabeth Furniss (could be Furness).  We believe he came to NZ as a Remittance passenger. Would appreciate any help

Thank you so much, that certainly seems to fit.  I've still got to find how he came to NZ, there seems to be variations of what being a Remittance passenger was?

I've not actually heard the phrase "remittance passenger" but I would guess that means he paid his way.

Trying to find passenger list for Edward Bell who married Mary Amelia Hull in New Zealand.  Have had no luck in trying to find him with New Zealand records!  Would appreciate any help.  He came from Carlisle.

Hi,

Do you know when and where Edward died? Death records may give an estimation of how long he had lived in New Zealand.

Mary Amelia Bell died in 1950, aged 91 years.

The couple were married in 1880.
