Just for info:

I just looked at the fiches in Portsmouth RO and it seems like the possibilities are

Mary Ann Webb (baptised 24/12/1802) daughter of John and Mary
Mary Ann Farndell (baptised 17/7/1803) daughter of Arthur and Phoebe

and a few Marys - Rogers (ds. of William/Mary or William/Phoebe), Duke (Edward/Mary), Cox (James/Ann), and Coxe (Matthew/Mary).

familysearch.org gives the same results if you search on Warblington rather than Emsworth

The birth certificate of one of the children would give her maiden name.  Mary is too common a name to try to second guess which one it might be.  You might end up following the wrong trail.

However, you say "might have married" - does this mean that you have not found a marriage?  Have you looked to see if you can marry or 'kill' any of the candidates off?

Hi

It always helps if you can place them on census for us  ;D

For anyone looking -
1851 living St Pancras
Charles 42 bn Hampstead
Mary A 48 bn Emsworth
Charles J 6 bn St Pancras
William T 4 bn St Pancras
John Barker 46 visitor bn Bedfordshire

She was quite old to be having her first children, I wonder if she was married before?

Sorry, just started, and getting used to protocols   :)

Stupidly, instead of doing that I've ordered a BC for Mary Ann which won't tell me anything! More thought required...

... although the Parish Register birth entries I've found for both children give mother's name as Mary Ann Johnson. Would the actual certificate give her maiden name?

A birth certificate (if there is one this early) would give the mothers maiden name. Christening records normally only give her married surname though sometimes you can be lucky.

According to Charles John's christening he was born 7th September 1844.

William Thomas was bn 13th May 1846 according to his christening (resident Camden Town)

Thanks Rosie, I've ordered the BC for William T.

If anyone's interested, the tree's on ancestry.com as Jackson / Johnson (public)
