James Bolton 12-12-1888
« on: Saturday 21 April 12 12:23 BST (UK) »
Hi - I'm a beginner on roots chat and this is my first post.
I wonder if anyone has information on James Bolton.  He is my husband's grandfather.  I believe he was born Adamstown Cardiff in 12-12-1888.  However on 1911 census his birthdate is listed as 1890.  I believe his death to be Cardiff Jan-Feb-Mar 1972.  His ww army records state he was a platelayer.  He has a brother John Bolton who lived at 18 Humphrey Street Cardiff.  John's date of birth was 7/9/1914 Cardiff.  James' wife is listed as Catherine Frazer and they had 15 children and I have their names and dates of birth.  The army record lists first two as William James Bolton Frazer 7/10/11 and John Frazer 7/9/14 both Cardiff.  His military history is for Monmouthshire Royal Reserve Engineers and his army number was 5687.  Catherine Frazer married James on 8/11/1913 at Cardiff Registry Office.  Witnesses James and Mary Ellen Sullivan.
A member of the family thinks at some time he was in Sheffield - but I can't verify this.
I am trying to trace Jame's parents so I can grow the tree.  Does anyone have any information or have James in their tree.
Hope this is in the right format, regards Helen  :)

MODIFIED - Apologies, I've just re-read this in conjuction with comments posted further down and noticed I have confused son John born 1914 with James' Brother John who lived in Humphrey Street Adamsdown

Hi, you don`t say where James was born.   The simplest way to find his fathers details is to get James and Catherine`s marriage certificate, should give fathers name and occupation.

There`s a 1911 census which throws some doubt on the idea that your James is the son of the horse slaughterer.

There is a James David Boulton 22 who was born Merthyr Tudfil, he is a horse slaughterer at  Trebodden Farm, Merthyr.  He is the head, and some of the siblings from 1901 are also there.

Again, to be 100 sure , marriage certificate is needed, or you could be down the wrong track entirely as this find has proved.

Are you absolutley certain that John was James brother and not his son.
This suggests otherwise

Thanks everyone so far

War records definitely state he has a brother John and his address in Cardiff

But you have given the same DOB for both brother and son ,  and   the entry on the war records seems to be have been altered, Johns name has been struck out and Catherine`s name added in a different handwriting.

I had another look with fresh eyes this morning and found a few more things to think about.

Looking again at James military records ( image 6340)  he is down as religion RC, Catholic.

I found this family in 1901 , Jas ( James ) aged 11 was born Ireland, as was his mother and elder siblings
Many of the people in the same area are Irish, and the witnesses at James marriage , the Sullivans have an Irish sounding surname.

1901
1 Bedres Court, Dowlais,
James Bolton 60  check age ?  firing ? boilers  b Essex
Elen Bolton 38 b Ireland
Bathomlew Bolton 16 b Ireland
Mary M Bolton 14 b Ireland
Jas Bolton 11 b Ireland
Patrick Bolton 6 b Dowlais
Peter Bolton 3 b Dowlais

The same family ten years later,  are at 10 Beddows Court , Sand St, Dowlais, James is still with his parents, and is now working in the steelworks. Some of the children are not there , but there is now a daughter Nellie aged 9.
This seems to be a better chance of being the correct family as his sister Mary M   from 1901 has been  married  2 years and is now Mary  O Sullivan.
James Bolton 45 steelworker b Essex
Ellen Bolton 45  domestic b Leap, County Cork
Mary O'Sullivan  ?  22  domestic b  City Cork
James Bolton 20  steelworker b City Cork
Patrick Bolton 15 steelworker bDowais
Nellie Bolton 9 b Dowlais

Marriages Jun 1908 Merthyr T
BOLTON    Mary Margaret / Sullivan  William

I think the other 1911 record you found may be  the wrong James Bolton.
Apart from the place of birth on the Army records, most of these new finds seem to look quite a good match.
James Sullivan , the witness may not be Mary`s husband , but perhaps another relative .

I still would say get the marriage  certificate to be sure .

Modified , check age on 1901
