Never heard of farmer going bankrupt before. Some just changed jobs but there seems more to it than that.

I don't think I have heard of a farmer going bankrupt either, but the name and address are right.
I suppose it could be that the farm was doing ok, but other debts (? bad investments/ ?gambling/? wine, wimmin and song :-) - lots of possibles) could have resulted in the enforced sale of the farm to raise money for his creditors I suppose.
The drop in status after 1881 would imply that any money/property had disappeared to pay to his creditors.
ADDED by "selling the farm", I would doubt he owned the land, but would own the machinery, stock, equipment, etc and perhaps ( though I am not sure of this) he could raise money on the remainder of the lease if it was a lengthy one.
