« on: Sunday 22 April 12 00:01 BST (UK) »
Hi does anyone know how we should go about trying to find out service history for my husband's grandad.
We don't know what regiment he was in we think he may have served in the Airbourne Division or something similar. He served in Egypt and took part El Amein not sure where else can anyone help please.
His name was Victor Baxter born 1917.

Thanks Denise67

To get the service records you have to apply here:

http://www.veterans-uk.info/service_records/service_records.html

There is a fee and there is quite a long wait.

Has your husband or his family still got any photos taken during the war by his grand dad?    Do you know whether he volunteered for the Army or was  he called up?   When did he get married as that may give a clue.

My parents were married during WW2. Both have their name, rank, and number on the marriage certificate. My father Army and my mother WRAF. There were only four Victor Baxter men married England/Wales 1937-1947. One before the war, two during the war and one after the war. That does not include the ones in Scotland, Ireland or anywhere else.

Now we know that the was married somewhere in Essex, near Rochford or Southend on Sea. Not too far away from where he was born. Free BMD.
