Adeline,

I know Mere Green very well but can not picture a building that looks like the one in your photograph.  I see there appears to open countryside behind the cottage but there is certainly none around Mere Green today.

There has been a lot of modern development but some of the older buildings have survived.

If you would be happy to let me have your GG grandfather's name I could look him up on the census and see if any of the neighbouring names/addresses help to pin point a possible location for the cottage.

All the best,

Pinetree

P.S. http://billdargue.jimdo.com/placenames-gazetteer-a-to-y/places-h/hill-hill-hook/ This website shows some old buliding in Mere Green which look similar in style.

Adeline,

From your other posts it looks as if it is Henry BROWN you are interested in.  From 1901 census he was living on what is now Mere Green Road near to St James Church.  The next street mentioned is Church Lane which is now know as St James Road.

There are still some older buildings in this area but also a modern Sainsbury supermarket and until recently a Lucas car parts factory. Will definitely keep my eyes open for a building that looks anything like yours next time I am in the area.

This is my ggg grandfather Henry James Brown ;D So you know Mere Green well ;)
Why are there so many James Brown in the area  ::) I'm having such a hard time trying to find info on my gg grandfather James Brown the police officer :-\ Is there any way to tell if this was a large family in the area  :D

Thanks for sending me the link for old buildings in the area ;)

Adeline,

Very much my old stomping ground although I am in Yorkshire now.

Have sent you a PM about Ivy Cottage.

Pinetree,

I wonder if James and Fanny Brown were married in St James Church and  if that's where they had their children christened. I think Fanny was from that area so I guess that's possible, :)
