Marriage of Alice Noble to George Ellison
« on: Sunday 22 April 12 09:32 BST (UK) »
Hello
This is all new to me but I would love some help in tracing the marriage of my Great Grandmother Alice to George Ellison as I have drawn blanks everywhere.
Alice was born Alice Maud S Noble, in Peterborough, in 1885 to George & Mary Ann Noble.
George, unfortunately, I know nothing about but believe he died around 1928 & is buried in Leicester's Welford Road Cemetery.
He & Alice had not been married very long when he died & I understand that they lived in Leicester for this period.
Family "history" says that he was married when he met Alice, around 1904/05, but to whom I don't know, nor do I know if he had any children with his first wife.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you

Thank you - I had found this & thought it was possibly my George Ellison but knowing so little about him wasn't prepared to "own" it.

Can't find a marriage between Alice & George?

Maybe George wasn't divorced or widowed, and he and Alice simply lived together?
It was fairly common back then, when dicorce was expensive and difficult! ;D

Had thought of that.
On the 1911 Census she is listed as Alice Noble, in the London Electoral Registers of the 1940's she's Ellison & her death in 1966 is recorded as Alice M S Ellison.
She may well have taken his name rather than marry him but she waited along time to do it!

Welcome to Rootschat!

If you purchase George's death cert, if you're lucky the informant will have been Alice, thus confirming you have the right death.

In what name was your grandparent, George and Alice's child, registered? Noble or Ellison?

My grandfather, born in late 1905, was registered as "Noble".
His full birth certificate should land in my mail box any day now, we may be lucky & his father may be there but I'm not getting my hopes up.  His marriage certificate has his grandfather "George Noble (dec'd) Coach Builder", the man who raised him, listed as his father.
I have Alice's death certificate on order & will have to bite to the bullet & get a copy of George Ellison's 1930 death certificate.

How sure are you that George Ellison was his father?

I'm not sure at all.
It's all based on an "Oh, by the way did you know..." conversation my mum had with her much older sister (now dec'd) a decade or so ago when all concerned were long since dead.
