Newcastle Upon Tyne Union - Completed
« on: Tuesday 24 April 12 08:25 BST (UK) »
Hi,
I have a copy of a birth certificate and the Registration District is shown as "Newcastle Upon Tyne Union". It's dated June 1850 and the Sub-district is All Saints. What is the significance of the word Union"? I've tried googling and it comes up with reference to the Workhouse. Does it refer to births in the Workhouse??

Pete

Does it also give an address for the birth?  It is more likely to be within the "union" district than in the workhouse.  That description does cause a lot of confusion nowadays.
