Scarborough Newspapers 1916
« on: Thursday 19 May 05 11:08 BST (UK) »
Hi,
My great grandfather's fishing boat was sunk by a
German submarine on 4th July 1916 , 28 miles of the
coast of Scarborough.
It was called ' Queen Bee' my g.gf  Charles Henry Pitchers
was the skipper, and he was killed.
Would anyone know where I should look for the newspapers
that may have covered the story?
Many Thanks,
Moira

Hi Moira

It will be covered in the Scarborough Mercury.  There are microfilmed copies of that paper in Scarborough Library which I can look at for you if you wish.

Please let me know if you want a look up doing.

Best wishes

Hi Moira

I'm puzzled by this one.  I have looked through quite a lot of the newspapers for around the time you refer to now and can't find reference to this event.  More puzzling is the report in the Scarborough Mercury on 14 July 1916 which says "It is just over a year ago since the Scarborough Trawler Condor was sunk as the result it was presumed of striking a mine... and previous to that the Scarborough Trawler Merrie Islington was sunk by a German Submarine. .... Since these mishaps Scarborough vessels have been immune from misadventure which could be attributed to the enemy until Thursday.  In the latest "bag" of this form of "warfare" the rumour arose this (Thursday) morning, in consequence of a telephone message from Whitby, that the Scarborough Trawlers Florence (skipper Wlater Crawford) and Dalhousie (skipper Harry Eade) were included....."

There is no mention of the Queen Bee  ???

Not sure what to make of it.

Best wishes

Hi Moira

No problem.  ;)

Could the date you have  be wrong?  Where did you get it from?  I wonder if it could be a year out or something?

Best wishes

Hi Ticker,

Thanks for your interest.
I found the information on this naval history site;

http://www.naval-history.net/WW1oFVLosses1914-16.htm

As my g- grandfather came from Lowestoft the family thought
the boat was sunk of the coast close to there, then I found the
naval web site.

Regards,
Moira

Hi Moira

Interesting site.

It says 28 miles NE of Scarborough - so would be somewhere off the coast at Whitby.  I wonder if that's why it wasn't reported in the Scarborough paper?

I'll keep looking.

Best wishes
