Birmingham Parish records - Sylven birth abt 1824

Hi Everyone

I have hit a brick wall and would appreciate any assistance.

My tree starts at THOMAS GEORGE SYLVEN born abt 1824 Birmingham.

The following info was sourced from his marriage cert in 1953

Location of marriage Mortlake, Richmond, Surrey
His occupation was mechanic
His father was JAMES
His fathers occupation was Licenced victualer

I have census records for Thomas George Sylven for 1871,1881,1891 and they all show him living around London but all say he was born in BIRMINGHAM

I have searched BMD indexes but can not find any SYLVEN's except for Thomas and his offspring.

I would dearly like to pop into Birmingham and check out parish registers for Thomas's birth and any indication of his origins but unfortunately the commute from Australia is a bit long 

Any assistance getting past this brick wall would be greatly appreciated

Hi Howard, it looks like Thomas married again in 1887?

Thomas George Sylven March 1887 Bromley 2a 502 on same page is a Maria Slaughter, who is possibly the "Housekeeper" on the 1871 Census in Lambeth.

He is shown as SYLONE on the 1861 Census aged 36 occ Gun Maker b Birmingham, his wife is a Maria aged 21 b Westminster.
Residing at 14, Lower Stone Street, Chelsea.

Hi Howard - I have news for you. Thomas Sylven was born as Thomas Sullivan in Ireland c1824/5. See 1841 census for Birmingham where he can be found using his birth name aged 17 and a gun maker. I also suggest you look up the Old Bailey court records at oldbaileyonline.org where you will discover Thomas was a bigamist.  I know of 3 marriages plus one more relationship producing children but for which we have not yet found a marriage. These are: (1) Charlotte Elizabeth Blanks 1845 Whitechapel, Middlesex (now east London); Thomas used the name Sullivan for this one only (2) Emily Maria Laker 1853 Mortlake, Surrey (3) Maria Lee - no marriage found, children born between 1862 & 1865 & we know they were living as man & wife in the 1861 census (4) Annie Maria Slaughter 1887 Bromley, Kent, Register Office. He divorced Charlotte in 1871 so the Laker marriage was bigamous & the Slaughter marriage legal. I hope this helps you.
