Just had another look and Have found Elizabeth Bird that fits with your dates.

Elizabeth, daug of Jonathan & Susan Bird, bapt 5 Feb 1792.

this is more likely the one. which makes me wonder are there 2 James and Elizabeth Barkers, where this Nathaniel comes in, as there are twins in the family line of Nathaniel, but none in my line, there  is also an Isaac Barker born abt 1813 who married a Merriam, that was thought to be a brother of Nathaniel..  All very confusing as my there is an Isaac Barker also a bricklayer involved here.

You don't have to go to Essex to to look at the "old handwritten records", presuming you mean the Parish Registers you can view (pay to view) them online in the Essex Records Office's SEAX system.

On the screen that comes up go to the right hand side, click on Essex Ancestors and then follow the prompts.

Even if you went to the ERO you would be unlikely to view the original PRs, it would be either microfiche or digital copies, mind you it's free to view at the ERO  .
