Ellen RILEY: South Normanton
« on: Sunday 29 April 12 11:07 BST (UK) »
I am trying to determine the parentage of Ellen RILEY who married Joseph NAYLOR in Pinxton on August 15th 1855. At that time she was said to be 19 years old. I have seen one reference to a father named Thomas

The 1841 census shows an Ellen RILEY (aged 4 years) living with her widowed grandmother Frances RILEY. There are three of Frances' daughters (all unmarried) in the same abode: Mary, Hannah and Elizabeth. Was Ellen the daughter of one of these girls?

Living in the same house was Joseph Marriott (aged 9 years). He was the son of Frances Riley's oldest daughter, Sarah, who had married Samuel Marriott in  1820. Sarah died in 1841 - presumably the reason for Joseph living here at the time.

I have not found any other reference for a Thomas Riley

Many thanks

Hi Sharon

Yes, I'd seen that entry too. However, there are no entries for a Harriett Riley for South Normanton in the right year range (1795 - 1822) - although there are seven children of William and Frances Riley listed. I wonder if Hannah (b 1806) or one of the others was known as Harriett?

Maybe a mystery that will remain a mystery!!

Many thanks.

Either that or Ellen is a Great/Grand Daughter of Frances.
Eg Sarah 1799 or Ann 1801 may have had an illeg Daughter who then had Ellen.

I dont know how common the Rileys were in Sth Normanton but there was a RICHARD who was Buried there 28 July 1824 age 22
ALICE, Daug of Wm/Frances 06 Aug 1799
FRANCES, Daug Wm/Frances 10 May 1811
MARY, 24 May 1829, age 11
FANNY, Wife of William 23 July 1826, age 55
GEORGE, 12 May 1834, age 12
WILLIAM, 09 April 1835, age 62

So Alice at least is not listed as a Child of Wm/Frances on Familysearch, so  there may be others.

Trish :)

I hate to throw another spanner in the works Alan :P

But I think the Frances 1841/1851 Census may be a second Wife for William and the Fanny Burial 1826 is his 1st Wife.
I presume you have William marrying Frances NORWOOD, 01 Jan 1794, Pinxton?

Marriage from FreeREG;
03 December 1827, Holy Cross, Morton, Derbyshire
William RILEY, Widower of South Normanton
Frances STANLEY, Spinster of Morton

1851 Census has Frances born c 1775, Pennton (Pinxton?), Derby,
(under Farmer Riley)

Sorry if you have already worked this out or I have it wrong.

Hi Trish

I had half figured the two marriages of William Riley (although I don't think there was any issue from the second). I hadn't got a maiden name for the first Frances.

It does seem from Familysearch that there may have been three RILEY families in the town at the time at issue.

The RILEYs of South Normanton are really of secondary interest to my main researches as they have been involved in a number of "affinial" intermarriages between my main lines. However the genealogy of South Normanton at the beginning of the nineteenth century is so interwoven I'm trying to untangle several strands. Each time, an extra bit of clarity appears.

So: NAYLOR, BALL, HAYWOOD, MARRIOTT, KYTE and GASKIN (GASCOIGNE) are all in my blood line.

Cheers Alan
