St John's Hospital
« on: Sunday 29 April 12 14:35 BST (UK) »
I have found a possible match for a missing family member working as a nurse at St John's Hospital, Cowley, in the 1891 census. (She was born in Halifax, Yorkshire but disappears after the 1881 census). Does anyone know whether there are records in any local library relating to this hospital? She is not a direct ancestor and this is probably a long shot, but I am interested in whether and why she would have moved so far from her family to work at this hospital.

Hi Maggie J :)

Did you mean the National Hospital for Incurables, otherwise known as St John's Hospital, in St Mary's Road?  Census ref. RG12/1164/83/pages45-47.

If that's the right place, several of the nurses and Sisters (Anglican nuns) were born in Yorkshire.  If your family member was a Sister (you don't mention her name), I can dig out some information about the religious order she belonged to.

I'll wait for your reply before looking for hospital records, just in case I've got the wrong place :D

Regards,
Carol

Thank you for your  reply Carol. That is the right hospital. Her name was Mary Tatham born in Mixenden, which is in Halifax, Yorkshire. She is described as a nurse - servant. I had noticed that some of the sisters came from Yorkshire. Her elder sister died in the South Yorkshire asylum in 1889 and that may have inspired her to do this work - but then I may be just jumping to conclusions! Thanks for your offer.

Ok Maggie, I've got a bit more info for you :)

When your Mary was working there, the hospital was run by Sisters of the Community of St John Baptist whose 'HQ' was at Clewer near Windsor.  They have since relocated.

The work, and the name, carry on at the St Mary's Road site under 'new management'.  St John's Home (a nursing home for the elderly) and other good things are now run by All Saints Sisters of the Poor - see their website www.asspoxford.org for contact details.  I suggest you ask them initially about the St John's records as this is outside the NHS, so not part of the Health Archive at the Oxfordshire Records Office.

Hope this helps,
Carol (great-niece of a Clewer Sister)
