Can you recognise this cap badge?
« on: Sunday 29 April 12 22:01 BST (UK) »
My grandfather George died at the Battle of the Somme on the 1st of July, 1916.  He served in the York & Lancaster Regiment I have his medals and have visited his grave.  After many years of searching I finally have a photograph of him and my Nanna taken presumably before he went to war.
Can anyone confirm what cap badge he has as it would not appear to be the York & Lancaster one.

The photograph also shows him wearing a wound stripe. Don't forget that men would be drafted into other regiments/units when there was a shortage etc and where they were needed.

Thank you for that information, I did wonder what the stripe was for.

When he was killed he was in the 9th Bat. York & Lancaster Regiment and is buried near Albert.

Good evening,

That's the Royal Sussex Regt, Cheshires is just an 8 pointed star. If the top of the cap was'nt folded down you would see the prince of wales feather.

Looks like the Cheshire Regiment cap badge.

OR

Yes it is.... ;)

One must be very careful when looking at badges, as many changed over the years....The Gib Regiments castle was often different on many badges prior to them being standardised in 1902, and between the wars many lost bits and added bits to the badge...Some changed completely...

Its the scroll at the bottom which pinpoints the Cheshires (as well as the acorn in he middle!!)
One more charge and then be dumb,
When the forts of Folly fall,
May the victors when they come
Find my body near the wall.
