Capt. J. Houldsworth, 1st Lancs (Barrow) Bn. H.G.
« on: Tuesday 01 May 12 11:03 BST (UK) »
My partner has been going through some household items and has come across a silver cigarette case with the following inscription.

"Presented to
Capt. J. Houldsworth, 2nd I/C
by
Major P.W. Cockcroft O.C.
Officers and NCOs of
"B" Coy. 1st Lancs (Barrow) Bn. H.G.
1940 - 1944".

Apparently there is no family connection but out of curiosity I've been trying to find a bit more information, but unfortunately with little success.

I'm assuming that it is something to do with the Home Guard but I haven't been able to find anything specifically about the two people named and I've only found very brief references to the 1st Lancs (Barrow) Bn.

Does anybody have any information that might help?

Many thanks.

The South Staffs HG site is very useful...

http://www.staffshomeguard.co.uk/AWELCOMEstaffshomeguard.htm

And many books on local HG units were published apres the war

Kew holds the "HG List" a version of the "Army List" which nakes all officers

And for what they looked like...

One more charge and then be dumb,
When the forts of Folly fall,
May the victors when they come
Find my body near the wall.
