One of my ancestors has the middle name of Herman and he also named a son Herman.  Does anyone know where this name originates, or is it a common name in England?   Maureen

My book says it means "man of the army" and it is Old German, Variants include Armand, Armando, Armin, Ermanno, Ermano, Ermin, Harman, Harmon, Hermann, Hermie, and Hermon.

Not overly common in the UK but a quick and dirty search on the IGI gave 2435 most with germanic surmanes and distributed around the NE and SE.

All the best,
Pam

Thanks for your reply Pam.  I wondered if it possibly had a German origin to it - one does wonder where our ancestors originated from.  Maureen
