Benjamin Thompson-Susan Clark
« on: Saturday 05 May 12 00:29 BST (UK) »
Hello
I am looking for passengers Benjamin Thompson and Susan Clark arriving from England in Ontario 1962-1872.
They were not married but they were together. Benjamin left a wife and four sons in England. Benjamin s wife Ellen died in 1869. Benjamin would have been free to marry again in 1869.
Benjamin is said to have died in Newmarket in September 1972.

I am wondering also if this is possible Benjamins son by Susan?

George Edward Thompson. I have seen in the Canadian 1871 census that he lives with his father Benj. Thompson age 46 and George is 6 years old calculated birth year 1865. It says province of birth is O. It does not show any mother.
It says George's father is English.
They live in Newmarket.North York, Ontario.
This is all I know,
Thank you

Hi there.

There is a death registration for a George Edward Thompson who d. 18 Aug 1929 in Fort William Ontario. He was aged 64, b. 1865, POB Fort William Ontario. Parents given as Benjamin Thompson and Susan Clarke, both b. England. THe death was registered by his wife, unhelpfully listed as Mrs G E Thompson. Burial was in Newmarket Ontario. Looks like he might be your man  :) and would narrow down the time of immigration. Unfortunately, civil registration of births only began in Ontario in 1869 so a birth registration won't be available unless he was registered late for some reason.

The 1871 census image does appear to have  Susan Thompson listed as the wife of Benjamin? There are just the 3 family members.

Added: George apparently married a Mary Brown in Aurora Ontario 18 Apr 1894. His parents are given as Benjamin and Susan Thompson.

A public tree on *A* has him married to some different but I don't see a related record.

Geo Ed L. Thompson, 33, of Toronto, Ont., widower, s/o Benjamin Thompson and Susan Clark married Jennie A. Seymour, 30, of Maidstone, Essex on 03 april 1899 Essex, Ont.

The above should be the family on the 1911 Ontario census.  There is an extended family tree on Ancestry tracing some of the family members of George.

Not a direct line but it appears Susan re-married after Benjamin died as there is a marriage for Susan Allen Thompson, 29, daughter of George and Elizabeth Clarke who married William Bell, 21 in Newmarket, Ontario on 12 Jan 1877. Susan, William and two children are on the 1881 census in Markham so George had at least 2 more half-siblings.
