Ady

Ady, I think you've cracked it! When I looked online for the REME badge I dismissed it as the R E M & E seemed pretty dominant - which is not the case in my uncle's photo. As an experiment I matched the scale of both images, and used the lasso tool in photoshop (to outline uncle's badge) and placed it on top of the badge pic you posted. And the inner 'loop' fitted perfectly. The image below shows both badges at the same scale and same (sort of) angle, I think that the gap from A to B looks the same on both badges.

I need to track down uncle Ron's service record online, so now I think I can safely say it was the REME he was in! That should help me track his records down more easily.

Thanks Ady!

REME is a possible regiment AFTER THE WAR.

Singapore fell to the Japanese 15 FEB 1942
REME formed OCT 1942
Ron Slade aged 18 circa SEP 1942
Singapore returned to the British 12 SEP 1945.

I'm happy to go along with a REME cap badge. Compare the highlights on the badge in the original photograph with the image of the badge supplied by Ady. They are pretty much the same in both and I cannot believe that the positioning of the light source in both photos was that close to being identical.
Many badges seem to have built- in highlight points, (the reason is beyond me to explain,) but these two images are so close I have to say I believe they are the same badge.

Hi there....it really looks like an Australian slouch hat, as the band is the same design as well...the badge looks like its from some sort of medical corp????? Maybe completely off the track but my gut goes with it...Its the band on the hat if you look at the Australian one and also the crown..Army badges were on the side of the upturned brim

Hope this helps, as i said maybe completely wrong

Sally

Yes it is deffo REME....

As for the "Australian" slouch hat.... ;)

The slouch hat was worn by ALL British, Empire and Dominion Forces at some point or another from the late 19th century onwards...Very popular apres the 2nd Boer War....

It was NEVER confined to Australian forces, and many a mistake has been made asumming thus  ;D

"Lemon Squeezers" were about the ONLY de facto ID confirmatory titfer style...Kiwis
One more charge and then be dumb,
When the forts of Folly fall,
May the victors when they come
Find my body near the wall.
