Buckley - Carrick on Suir
« on: Monday 07 May 12 11:09 BST (UK) »
Morning

Not so much a look-up request, more an ask if anyone is looking for the same family and would have any info to share as I don't have access to Irish Records.

My 3* Great Grandfather was Cornelius Buckley, born abt 1840 in Tipperary.  I think its Carrick on Suir as i've only been able to find one Cornelius Buckley in Tipperary.  This Cornelius has parent Michael Buckley and Ellen Sexton.

Cornelius married a Bridget Shean from Waterford.  I also think he had a brother called James.

Its a really unusual name so Im hoping he may have popped up somewhere else in someones family tree!

Amie

Do you have a marriage cert for Cornelius ?

This should show his father's name and occupation. One point to watch with Tipperary records is that only some parishes are available online at the moment, for the others (if the records go back far enough) you have to check the films in the National Library .. assuming your Buckley family were RC.

Hi Amie,

Do you have Cornelious on a census ?

Are you positive that he was from Tipperary as Cornelious is a well known Cork name ?

Do you know where and when he got married ?

Tara

I've just ordered Cornelius' marriage certificate so hopefully that will come through in next few days.

I have him on a couple of Census records from after he moved to south Wales.  The best is the 1891 census as this is the only one which actually record his place of birth as Tipperary.  He's 45 in this census (born 1846) which ties into the baptism record I found.

Hi Amie,

Yes I can see him now on the 1891 census stating Tipperary.

Hopefully you get a match when you get the marriage cert and sure you can get back to us and take it from there then.

Best of Luck

Tara

I hope so.  Its more for my Nanna than me.  She's very proud of having Irish roots so i'd like to get as far back into the family as I can for her!

...

Buckley is also a 'Cork' name... survey of 1890 births (Matheson) has the majority of Buckley births in Co. Cork... smaller numbers in n Kerry, Tipperary, Dublin and Kilkenny, and notes 'very few in other counties'

So it could possibly be that the family could be originally from Cork but moved to Tipperary?

Or was it uncommon to move around like that?

I would think the most common reasons for moving were for work, and maybe for marriage...  populations were quite mobile, but probably more commonly to cities, or large towns.

Counties Tipperary and Cork have a border - so may not have involved much of a move.
