I should mention that the idea of name distribution analysis is usually only a guide, and there are always exceptions, but like Tara mentioned - I see Cornelius and Cork or Kerry springs to mind, and with the surname Buckley, Cork springs to mind..

Yours could turn out to the be one of the Buckleys from Tipperary.

Hi Guys,

Yup, I agree with Shane - your Cornelious could have been from Tipperary but I reckon if you manage to get back another generation of two it's likely the family originated in Cork.

You mentioned earlier about families moving around. Please bear in mind that your Cornelious was born in the run up to the Big Famine in Ireland, so yes a lot of families were transient at the time.

Tara

Finally had the marriage cert back...

Cornelius Buckley born 1842
Father : Jeremiah Buckley (deceased)

Bridget Shean born 1846
Father : Thomas Shean (deceased)

Anyone know any good message boards (apart from this one) that might help me with irish research?

to search for earlier details for Corneilius and Bridget - i.e. their baptisms you will need to check for church records. Do you know what denomination your Buckley and Shean families were ?

Transcripts for some Co. Tipperary parishes are available on the pay-website at RootsIreland. They also have many RC baptism records for Co. Waterford - but as far as I know, no marriage records or CofI records yet.

Does the marriage cert mention occupation for the fathers ?

Nothing unless "deceased" was classed as an occupation :-S

The marriage was in the Roman Catholic church in Pontypool, Wales so I assume they were Roman Catholic. I will try the website you have suggested though.

Thank you

There are Jeremiah Buckleys listed on Griffith's Valuation (a land tax survey) that might be worth checking out as a possible father to Cornelius - see :

   Buckley - Tipperary South

These are dated around 1851.
