Sherwood Foresters Query
« on: Tuesday 08 May 12 22:02 BST (UK) »
I am inquiring for a friend.

Her father fought with Americans but was in the Sherwood Foresters. She thinks it was in Cassino/Salerno. Does anybody know when the Sherwood Foresters would have fought with American forces?

reg 4980222 Ronald Gascoigne Cooper..ended war as sgt.

Any help appreciated

The Sherwood Foresters were part of the US 5th Army in Italy and have battles honours:
Salerno, Volturno Crossing, Monte Camino, Anzio, Campoleone, Advance to Tiber, Gothic Line, Coriano, Cosina Canal Crossing, Monte Ceco, Italy 1943 - 45, so yes would have served along side Americans.

Hi Seth

Have been researching my Dad's war record on the 2nd Battalion of the Foresters at Anzio.  To answer your question I suggest you look for a copy of Carlo D'Este's book Fatal Decision.  You will obtain a different view of Operation Shingle and the pathway to Rome

cheers

Sterl
