« on: Wednesday 09 May 12 08:28 BST (UK) »
Hi There,

I recently received the birth certificate in 1859 in Hampshire, England stating as my 3xgrandfathers  occupation as Colour Sergeant Tipperary Artillery.

Please can anyone out there point me in the right direction, on if there are records for the Tipperary Artillery who were stationed in Hampshire, England.

Also what is the the exact regiment, i googled Tipperary Artillery but didn't get to much possitives.

Kind Regards

I am wondering if the word might be "temporary" rather than "tipperary".

If you post his name and birthplace we can search for a record

It might be better to post this query on the armed forces board, most military records of this type were held in London.

Gary says  that William Flanagan's occupation on the 1859 birth certificate was "Colour Sergeant Tipperary Artillery".

I at first thought that "Tipperary" here might be Temporary.

But searching the Hampshire newspapers of the period, I found that 7 companies of the Tipperary Artillery Militia arrived at Gosport on 28 January 1859 headed for Hasler Barracks and garrison duties at various local forts.

John Michael Flanagan was born at Hurst, Hordle so presumably William Flanagan was in the married quarters at Hurst Castle.

The Hampshire Advertiser & Salisbury Guardian for  February 19th 1859 reports that a company of Tipperary Artillery Militia had proceeded to Hurst Castle on 17th February to relieve the garrison there.

Gary,

I know there's a Waterford connection so you might be interested in this 1877 Waterford directory which has William Flanagan, militia sergeant, at 71 Manor Street http://waterfordhistory2.tripod.com/1877_directory_o_q.htm

Hi ShaunJ,

Thanks so much for a bit of info on the whereabouts of Tipperary Artillery.

About William Flanagan on the 1877 Waterford Directory looks very promising, as John Michael Flanagan married in 1883 to Gertrude Tiffin in Waterford City church.

So i noticed on the Waterford Directory, W. Tiflin(Tiffin) 35 The Mall, occupation: bandmaster Waterford Artillery, the father of Gertrude, so it looks like my 2xgrandparents fathers were with the same Tipperary Artillery regiment.

Thankyou

From later news reports it appears that the Tipperary Artillery Militia moved on from the Gosport area to Sheerness around March 1860, and returned to Ireland in March 1861 (thus missing the 1861 census for England).

This ties in with John Michael's baptism at Sheerness in December 1860 http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php?PHPSESSID=6oemmgrkk8koqlm69hnm7e4cp7&topic=590268.0
