St Martins was the church adjoined to the Minster for the builders to worship in, as they where not allowed to worship in the Collegiate church of ST John the Evangelist of Beverley ( The Minster ). The Minster was a sort of college for singing vicars in the middle ages and only became a parish church as part of Henry VIII supression of 1548. A group of local citizens bought the whole site for £100 The Church of St Martin was pulled down along with the Chapter House and Charnel House and raised  £120 towards keeping the main church intact.

The old St Martin church has long since vanished however traces of it can be seen on the Southern side where it was attached to the Minster.
