COVENEY from Cork-Dunmanway
« on: Sunday 13 May 12 13:42 BST (UK) »
Hello:   First I would like to thank those on here that give advice and help because reading some of them lead me to church records of what I strongly believe to be my x3greatgrandparents plus several baptisms of their children as I searched their names.
From my research here in Ont Can from distant relatives(ladies where Nuns and wrote to parish in Ireland) and census here etc I found my persons came from Dunmanway,County Cork before 1850. Family lore is that two cousins came first then the whole families(can't confirm that)but the families did come here.
In the records here my 3x grgrandparents are John COVENEY and Ellen MAHONEY on Michael COVENEY's marriage record. I found a baptism record for a Michael and these are the names for parents. It says a place called Derinasofa or Drunasofa on baptism's and Shiplock for place of parents marriage. Are these little towns? I know from reading there is a different way of naming land parcels in Ireland? Also John's brother Michael was supposedly (again with records of Nuns) married to a Ellen MAHONEY as well  The families are here close together.Their records have him being married by an O'Mahoney I believe it was. Looking for COVENEY connections   Thank-you  Sue

The official spellings for the places you mention are Derrynasafagh and Shiplough. They are both townlands in the civil parish of Fanlobbus. Townlands are a small division and these two would be rural. You could use Google Streetview to have a look.

In the tithe applotment when you click on derrynasafagh you go to more info It has Michael Coveney and company. My question how would one find out more about this.I clicked about from that spot.Maybe Dunmanway Historical Society I believe I seen that. I'll ask them if anything on who the partners. Thanks
