Help with finding Jane from Worthen
« on: Sunday 13 May 12 19:02 BST (UK) »
Hello

I could really do with some help finding earlier records of my gg grandmother Jane (married name Jones)

She appears on all the censuses from 1871 to 1901, with a birth date 1843-45 and consistent birthplace of Worthen

1901 Census  RG13/2553 /167/2
Wood Farm, Burlton, Loppington, Wem
Edward Jones 1848 (53) Worker   Born Hopton, Salop
Jane Jones 1845 (56) Born Worthen, Salop

1891 census  RG12 /2123 /101/3
Pickhill Lane, Loppington, Burlton
Edward Jones 1845 (46) Farm labourer   Born Ruyton of the XI towns
Jane Jones  1844  (47)    Born Worthen, Shropshire  (error on transcript – 1850 and 41)

1881 census  RG11/2668/5 /2
Cross Keys, Burlton, Loppington

1871 census    RG10 /2793/36 /8
Wood, Burlton

From the censuses, I have identified a number of Janes from Worthen, born at around the right time, but that's as far as I've got. Of course, it could be some other Jane altogether. If anyone has access to parish records to find Jane's birth, baptism or marriage or her census entry in 1851 and 1861, I'd be very grateful.

Many thanks

Mike

1851 census

Loppington is a CofE Parish but the family may be non-conformists. Loppington has admission registers for its National School so William (1874) may be recorded in these registers. If a birth date for William was found for him in the registers then it would make the finding of his birth certificate more precise.

1871 has a Mary (0) so presume she is the first child?

If so marriage in 1870 Shrewsbury has an Edward Jones Jane Probert in the mix.

Couple of marriages in 1869 Ellesmere Jane Harris.
Wellington Salop Jane Ball one of the brides.

Hinchliffe - Huddersfield Wiltshire
Burroughs - Arlingham Glos
Pick - Frocester Glos

Thanks all four for your replies.

Pam, downunder  and BarryD - I haven't found the right birth certificate yet, but I do have the wrong one. William Jones, March quarter 1874 Wem Shropshire  6a  737 Wem looked  so right but it wasn't him at all! Bang goes another 9 quid.

Milliepede - the first child turned out to be called Mary Jane, which later seemed to be shortened to Jane.

Since posting my query, I've managed to get hold of the baptism records of both William Edward and Mary Jane, thanks to a very kind man, David Edge, in Loppington. They are as follows:

21 Dec 1873. Edward William Jones son of Edward and Jane of Burlton - Labourer.

9.Nov. 1870 Mary Jane Jones dau of Edward and Jane of Burlton - Labourer.
and a note in the margin of Mary Jane entry - born 7 November 1870

This doesn't give me a maiden name for Jane but does confirm her and Edward as the parents.

It also confirms them as C of E

Solatium - no I don't have a death certificate or know where she died yet. Would this give a maiden name?

Milliepede - thanks for those Edward Jones/Jane marriage, which I'll put in the list of possibles. Hopefully something will jump out of that list at me soon.

Barryd - was the National School a non-conformist organisation?

I'll go and digest some more of what I do know now.

Many thanks again

Mike

Hmmm

FindMyPast gives three Mary Jane Jones registered in Shropshire in 1870, but all three are prior to her birthdate

There are 4 registered in 1871

One in Atcham, 4th quarter
One in Madely, 3rd quarter
One in Atcham, 3rd quarter
One in Whitchurch, 2nd quarter

Whitchurch might be the best guess, but the odds aren't great! Any ideas?

National Schools  provided elementary education, in accordance with the teachings of the Church of England, to children with poor parentage. There are some buildings still existing.
