John ALBAN or ALBON
« on: Monday 14 May 12 20:25 BST (UK) »
On 25 Nov 1757, John ALBON married the widow, Mary EVANS, in Llandyfeilog, CMN. I believe that the ALBAN family moved into Carmarthenshire from Cardiganshire and that its roots might be from around Llansantffraid. Can anyone shed any light on this, please?

Hello  :)

There are several Alban probate documents on the National Library of Wales index:

http://www.llgc.org.uk/index.php?id=487

These include the 1786 will of John Alban, Yeoman of Llandyfaelog

http://hdl.handle.net/10107/107919

and the 1799 will of John Alban, Gent, of Penlan, Llansanffraid, Cardigan

http://hdl.handle.net/10107/951566

Kind Regards
Morgan

Morgan,

Thanks for that. I shall have a look at both and let you know how I get on.

Morgan,

After much wasted paper, I have finally managed to print the wills and must now do a 'cut-and-paste' job on them to get them into readable form.

Morgan,

My wife and I have studied the wills, which are extremely interesting. It looks as if they are the wills of cousins rather than lineal ancestors, but they contain much useful information.

It looks as if we must add these two John ALBANs to the three we already know about, all of whom were contemporaneous - 3 in Llandyfeilog, 2 in Llansantffraid. And we thought that ALBAN was comparativley rare!

Interesting!  I expect you know that "Yr Alban" is Welsh for Scotland, so the origin of the name here is likely to be a Scottish family (or more!) who moved to Wales.

Modified - if you search the NLW site for name ALBAN, it is quite interesting, as it also appears as a first name.

Did you see the William Alban Will of 1742?

Morgan,

Yes, we have come across Alban ALBAN, he was a son of John ALBAN & Anne DAVIES of Llansantffraid.

We have  a William ALBAN (the only one, so far!) who was born c1677, so the will you've spotted could be his. We'll dig it out and see what it tells us. Thanks for the tip.
