Uniform?
« on: Wednesday 16 May 12 18:51 BST (UK) »

Hi

Not the best of photos but can anybody identify the uniform please?

I suspect the picture was taken in 1921.

Many thanks, Eric

Cracking photo!

I'm not sure the resolution is good enough but can you get a close up of the badge on the cap?

Thanks :D

I'll see if I can do anything with it tomorrow.

Is it a regular Army uniform of the era, do you know?

Eric,
My guess is the Welsh Regiment, there are lots of British Regiments that use the Prince of Wales feathers as a badge with and without double scrolls underneath, The Welsh Regiment is the nearest I can find to this cap badge,
ww1 era uniform
It should say ICH DIEN on the first scroll and THE WELSH on the second scroll. The shoulder title should say WELSH

Why not post on the Armed Forces Board

This seems to be the best I can get without it breaking up or blurring. I don't think it will help.

I'm not too sure about the date. I assumed 1921 because of some writing on the back, but I can't imagine he would have been in the Army in 1921.

Just a shame the other wrist isnt visible if he had overseas chevrons visible may have been easier to date.Theres no medal Ribbons so if he did serve overseas then its no later than 1922 or earlier than 1918(may be wrong but going off collar been altered from ww1 jackets)
Looks like Welsh Regiment at first glances Lance Corporal.

Good evening,

It's unusual that he is wearing straight trousers with turn ups. These wouldn't have fitted with puttees so I would say post WW1 which would fit with your date better. The welch regt is the best bet but 10th Royal Hussars had almost the same badge.

John,
I too considered the 10th Hussars bur their lower scroll  projects out past the edges of the rest of the badge whereas the The Welsh doesn't, This soldier's cap badge has scrolls that are all the same size and within the confines of the badge shape.
