1831 and 1861 CENSUS LOOK UP PLEASE
« on: Friday 18 May 12 09:26 BST (UK) »
Hello All, Would there be someone kind enough to look up the 1861 census records for John Axton - his wife was Howneatt/Harriett (nee Bent) and their children would be listed (if all still at home) as John, Ann, Alfred, Mary, Charles, William, Edwin and possibly Elizabeth and Kate.  In the 1831 census I am looking for John Axton whom I believe was married to another Harriet (nee Cherry) and their children would have been listed as John, Ann, Alfred, Mary.  I think that Harriet Cherry may have died in childbirth in late 1840 or early 1841.  Hoping someone out there can help me with this query as I am in Australia and am finding it quite difficult getting this mess sorted out.  Thank you in anticipation.

Where censuses earlier than 1841 have survived they don't contain much information of use to genealogists, and those that have survived aren't universally filmed as the later censuses are.

I can't find any of them in 1861, searching against christian names alone, or surname.

There's no burial of a Harriet Axton in Beds. However there's an Ann Axton age 29 buried in Luton on 22 March 1840. I don't think his first wife was Harriet. John and Ann Axton baptised a few children in Luton pre 1840, including an Alfred in 1837, who appears in 1841.

I've modified my earlier post, while other messages have been added. John's first wife wasn't Harriet, it was Ann

Hello Bedfordshire Boy,
Ann is often short for Harriet (don't know why but it is, have found it a lot on both sides of my family, a very popular name in those days by the sound of it) would there be any further information on Ann Axton buried in Luton on 22.3.1840 - I have a feeling she is the one I am looking for!!
Kindest regards,
Jillian
