Hello Bedfordshire Boy,
Ann is often short for Harriet (don't know why but it is, have found it a lot on both sides of my family, a very popular name in those days by the sound of it) would there be any further information on Ann Axton buried in Luton on 22.3.1840 - I have a feeling she is the one I am looking for!!
Kindest regards,
Jillian

I've never seen Harriett shortened to Ann. Ann was buried in Luton aged 29, and I'm sure she's the one you're looking for! The IGI shows that John and Ann baptised four children in Luton between 1832 and 1839, two of whom, Jesse and Alice, were buried as infants, and the other two, Ann and Alfred, appear in 1841.

www.freebmd.org.uk has the birth of Alice in the March quarter 1839. Purchase the birth cert via http://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/certificates/ and you'll get Ann's maiden name.

In fact I wonder if John might have been married three times! There's a John Axton and Elizabeth  baptising children in Luton c1830, and the burial of an Elizabeth Axton age 27 in Luton on 8 Dec 1831

John Axton married Elizabeth Cherry at St Andrew Holborn on 23 Sept 1824. Bit of a coincidence that you think his first wife was Harriet Cherry! (I don't believe in coincidences). I think you have the surname correct.

It doesn't help that Luton burials have two of the children as ASCTON (Jesse on 8 Nov 1835 aged 1+, and Luke on 25 Oct 1835 age 3+)

There's a marriage of John Axton and Sarah Medcraft at Clerkenwell on 31 Dec 1798, which might be John's parents. Both were otp.

I think the mothers of John's children are pretty well covered by the IGI, as assuming it's the same John, and I think it is, the baptisms, late though some are, the mother is named in each case.

I don't understand why I can't find the marriage in 1832 of John and Ann, which presumably took place in Beds.
