Baptism in Ilkeston, Derbys.
« on: Friday 18 May 12 10:28 BST (UK) »
I am tracing a family from Ilkeston and wondered if anyone can help me confirm the surname of a baptism.  The person that I am stumbling on is Martha Lymb/Lumn who was baptised 18th January 1807 - parents are William & Elizabeth.  I have found info on 2 web sites but the surnames differ.  Can anyone confirm which of these names is correct ???.  Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Hi there

I think the correct name will be Lymb/Limb.  Its been spelt phenetically.
You have to remember that they had heavy accents in those days and
they could not read and write most of the time so they had to rely on
the scribe to write it down, they could not correct it.
It is also not unusual to see a y as a i in those days either.

If you see William and Elizabeths marriage it is Limb and the childrens
names are then Lymb.  They havent even spelt Martha correctly.
You didnt mention if you had William and Elizabeths marriage but I
think this is it
William Limb married Elizabeth Hudson on 29th May 1804 at North Wingfield,
Derbyshire.  So coming up to 208 years next week.

No other details I'm afraid..later baptisms do give father's occupation..as a matter of interest , there are four baptisms for LYMB..the only four in the whole registers (later entries are LIMB)

JAMES LYMB 20.08.1803..and JOSEPH LYMB 06.08.1808.....both of Joseph and Elizabeth

THOMAS LYMB 02.04.05 son of William and Mary

and of course MARTHA 18.01.1807 of William and Elizabeth........

..in terms of the spelling being specific..ther'e a fair chance they were related......
