Help with Handwriting from 1851 UK Census
« on: Friday 18 May 12 13:40 BST (UK) »
I have attached an entry from the 1851 UK Census and would like others opinion on what the christian name that I have marked in a red circle could be.

First must have been Susannah then crossed out and replaced with Tarramagh (or the like).  Not sure if it reads Tarramagh or not.  If it does where does such a name come from and would there be some meaning behind it.  It is against the word "Son", so obviously a male.

I've never heard of such a christian name.

Any hints,

Cheers rootschatters,

Hi Suzanne

Can you give us the census reference?  It's often easier to work these things out if we can see more of the image (which you are not allowed to post here)   :)

There is a place called Farramagh in Ireland, it doesn't seem very likely though, does it? Can you find him on the 1861 census?

Answering my own question! Census reference is HO107/1545/97/45

The parents Daniel & Honora are Irish, so franh's suggestion has possibilities - perhaps he was conceived there (??), though born in Whitechapel

I don't think it's Tarramagh, but Tarramach.
What looks like a g is actually the top of the h in Susannah melding into the line above it.

Hi All,
Now I do feel a bit silly - of course it is Jeremiah.  Just needed some new eyes on it.

Yes, this is the same family in the 1841 census.  All makes sense now.

Obviously written in the 1851 census as it must have sounded.

Cheers to all
