Jury's out still on these two Mary Stewarts! No IGI entries for children to John McCallum and Mary Stewart. Possible for them in 1881 - both Mary's the same age  ::):

John McAllum 27, farm servant b. Stirling, Stirlingshire
Mary McAllum 33, b. Kincardine, Perthshire
John Greenhorn 11 nephew b. Stirling, Stirlingshire

Address: High Street, Kincardine Pertshire

As for Maria Monteith, can't see anything as yet on her. No IGI children nor anything obvious for her in 1871/81 so far...nor a SP death for her either (just checked) :-\

Thank you very much Monica it really is very much appreciated  ;D

Poor Archibald though, what a life  :-\  I am as certain as I can be now about his blood father's family and mother, just a shame he was rejected by both.   :-\

Yes it looks like the jury is out on Mary and Maria, but at least their and Archibald's existence has been recorded.

I'll check the CWGC for WW1 for Archibald just in case.

What is your connection to Archibald? How did you pick up on him, was if from that 1871 census entry and trying to figure out parent?

Yes correct Monica he would be my third cousin twice removed BUT I have found who may be Archibald Stewart/McLachlan's father.  This young chap was born the same year and place as Mary and it would also explain the name Archibald (there are none in either branch of Mary's family which is why I was curious)

Name:    Archibald Mclachlan
Gender:    Male
Birth Date:    01 Nov 1848
Birthplace:    KINCARDINE BY DOUNE,PERTH,SCOTLAND
Father's Name:    Archibald Mclachlan
Mother's Name:    Isabella Mcdonald

That could well fit from what you have.

Like potential son, he is also proving ilusive to find apart from first census at home with parents in 1851! Can't easily see him from there...

For anyone tracing Archibald (Stewart) McLachlan this is a link to the Ragged School/Reformatory based at 46 Rose Street, Inverness. http://www.childrenshomes.org.uk/InvernessRfy/  The school closed in 1885.
