Sarah Loft / Sands / Warren 1907-ish?
« on: Sunday 20 May 12 20:14 BST (UK) »
I'm trying to trace my G Grandmothers's second husband.  My G Grandmother Sarah Loft married John Sands in 1897 in Manchester.  John died of TB in 1907 and Sarah remarried a James Warren.  I don't know when this marriage happened.  Sarah and James had at least four children: Alfred, Harry, Charles and Vera.  James died (again I don't know when) but Sarah went on to live up until 1950-ish.

Any help with James Warren and his children gratefully accepted!

Phil.

I'm beginning to understand...  My G Grandmother would have reverted to her original maiden name of Loft and dropped her first husband's (deceased) name (Sands)...

Was it common to revert to the woman's maiden name?

She didn't revert to it, it would just have been shown on the birth certificate as it was her maiden name. The name of Sands would probably also have been on there as well.

Column 5 of a birth certificate shows the name, and previous names if any, of the mother of the baby. There are several combinations of name possible. If a woman has not been married there will be a sole entry for her name e.g. Martha Robinson. If a woman has ever been married there will be two names shown for her e.g. Martha Robinson formerly Wheeler. If a woman has been married more than once the names shown will be e.g. Martha Robinson late Wheeler formerly Gregory.

This might help
