parish records sawbridgeworth
« on: Tuesday 22 May 12 11:06 BST (UK) »
Hi I am trying to trace my great great great grandmother
Emma Yardley

Facts I know

Married in jun 1857 rochford Essex, to thomas potter.

1861/1871 census tells me she was born in Bishops stortford and sawbridgeworth, abt 1834

she died Sept 1877 Rochford,Essex.

I have found on LDS website a baptism record for Sawbridgeworth
14 may 1834 parents john and Ann

there are also other children named to john and Ann Yardley including another Emma in 1845
searched census found the rest of the family but not my Emma ???

I'm wondering if the transcription is wrong (Parents or Date??) Can anyone double check this for me.

Sadly I have found what may be a match 1841 in Bishops stortford workhouse a group of Yardley children. :'

1851 has the same family same village with addition of Emma aged 6yrs.
I don't know if this is the family of your Emma.
You may need to buy the marriage certificate to confirm father etc.

Hi Tinam

I had found this Family I originally thought this was the right John and Ann, but As  no Emma in 1841 and then an 6yr old Emma in 1851 i don't think it is. :(

I have a copy of 1861 this is the right one.

I found 2 transcript's for baptisms at sawbridgeworth
Both Emma Yardley parents John and Ann

 14 may 1834
25 may 1845
Second one fits the family you found.
I have gone back through my records to check I have the age correct and the dates range between 1833-36 so the first must be mine.  :-\

Found a 1841 Emma Yardley in workhouse aged 7 this fits, found a letter from workhouse records stating
"Emma Yardley illegitimate child from Thorley, who has been in the workhouse for 6 years."
Dated 9 may 1846.

This also fits age range :)
Baptism for Emma Yardley Thorley 1822 . Doesn't fit :(

Really really confused :-\ ???

I agree with Tinam you need the Marriage Cert.
1861 Census the 1st Child James was born before the Marriage.

1851 Census has a Emma Yardley born c 1833, Bishop Stortford, Herts, living with the Grange Family in Burnham, Essex. Described as a Daug.but image is House Servant.
HO107/1778/12/16

I presume this is the 1841?
Mary Gordley    15
George Gordley    12
Emma Gordley    7
Henry Gordley    6
Image is Yardley. If you noticed Mary is not born in County.

Just posting this so others may be able to help.

Trish :)

I agree with trish1120 - feel sure that your Emma is the one in the workhouse in 1841.   However, assuming that she is with her 3 siblings, the key would seem to be finding their baptisms but, with the exception of Mary (too common) I can't find any likely candidates for Emma, George or Henry either.

Looks like Henry Yardley died - Mar.qtr.1842 Bishops Stortford.

He was actually bur.12/3/1842 Thorley, Herts. so wonder if this was the original parish of origin for parents.
