news paper articles for Birmingham Mail
« on: Wednesday 23 May 12 21:31 BST (UK) »
Hello,

I,m so excited to have just received two news paper articles about my gx2 grandfather. The only problem is they are photo copied and hard to read and you can't see the photographs with the articles. I'm from Canada and not really sure on how to go about trying to get these news paper articles. The head lines are,

92's helper,aged79,is "good lad"

they had nothing on the "aston sloggers"

James Brown my 2x grandfather was 92 around 1954  and lived in sutton coldfield
I would love to be able to see the articles  :D I have been searching the internet trying to find out information on how to obtain the articles and cant find anything :(
can anyone help me please, I would be forever grateful ;D ;D ;D ;D
Thank you adeline b

hello adeline

the first move would be to check the british newspaper archive site.

they are currently digitising all (those that are not too fragile) newspapers stored at british library archives here in london.

i have had a look already and so far the titles included are birmingham post, gazette and journal.

so, you need to qualify the title of the relevant newspapers and if it is not one of those it will require a personal visit to the archives (i know you are in canada, but there are ways & means).

the dates (especially), names and page numbers are important too.

copies of the pages are a4, i believe a3? (larger anyway) is possible but a lot of detail is lost.

post the relevant information back and we'll take it from there.

If you know exactly what the papers title is then you can search here & find where the back issues are;

There are 3 titles:

thanks for that info jim,

it never ceases to amaze me that no matter what topic is posted someone comes up with a diverse website that is not listed generally.

we shall have to await a reply from the original post but i may have to rely on your info for assistance, stay tuned.

Hi,

Thank you Tony and Jim for your replies,

I just got home from work and tried the link you sent me Jim and I cant find results for the one article from the Birmingham mail, which I have a date for :-\ Not sure what I'm doing wrong ???The second article has no date but I'm sure I could figure it out as there are details in the article about my 2x great grandfathers retirement.
I could PM you the details if your willing to take a look.
I'm at a loss, I know the articles exist I just can't find them :(

What the site does is tell you where the back issues are held, then you can get a copy.

Hi adeline b

If you post the details openly, rather than in a pm to one chatter, you might find that someone else is able to jump in and help.

Hello,

Just thought I'd put a little more information about the articles out there. The Birmingham Mail, Friday,28th, May ,1954 is the date for "92's Helper, Aged 79, is " A Good Lad" and I have no date for the second and not sure what news paper it was published in.
Both articles are about the same subject. My grandfather lived at Ivy Cottage and in his 93rd year he had a volunteer Mr Wills who helped him take care of the gardens. One of the articles mentions my 2x great grandfathers police career up till his jubilee year of retirement from the police force, he joined the Staffordshire police force when he was 19 and transferred to the Birmingham Police force in 1884 and then in 1887 he was transferred to the Birmingham C.I.D.
After his retirement he was an inspector for the Birmingham branch of the royal society for the prevention of cruelty to animals. There is another article on the same page "The Dog With A Diamond Collar"
These news paper articles are important to me because of all the valuable information on my 2x great grandfather, but like I mentioned before they are very hard to read and you can't see the pictures that are there.

Thank you for taking the time to read my post  ;D ;D
