My mother was Helen McAlpin Forsyth. Her Father was Robert Forsyth and mother

I realise there are trees on the net but I'm having trouble with Jessies grandparents as they seem to vary with the different trees I look at. As a pensioner I don't want to send for expensive certificates until I'm reasonably sure who I'm looking at. I thought David Smiths father was Charles but then I found John Smith at the same address with a son David just a few years different in age.

I think I was right in the first place and his father was Charles. If I follow the census in 1841 Charles is Apprentice baker, 1851 he's a baker and his wife is Jessie Hay Smith. 1861 David is 8 and Margaret Craig is staying with them. 1871 David Smith is a baker Mother Jessie, (Janet) and the rest of the family line up as well. Grandmother was Jessie Hay Craig Smith so all the names fit and it seems to make sense. I should have done this in the first place.

Hi Grandi,

I think you are on the right track ...

David and Helen's marriage reg of 1879 confirms his parents as Charles Smith, baker (dec.) and Jessie Hay Smith m.s. Craig. Helen's parents were John McAlpine, gardener and Janet McAlpine m.s. Wilson (dec.).

The 1861 census shows, as you have:

Prestonpans
Charles Smith, m, head, 36, baker, b. Prestonpans
Janet Smith, f, wife, 33, -, b. Gifford
Margret [sic] Smith, f, dau., 9, scholar, b. Prestonpans
David Smith, m, son, 8, scholar, b. Prestonpans
Elizabeth Smith, f, dau., 7, scholar, b. Prestonpans
Thomas Smith, m, son, 5, scholar, b. Prestonpans
Janet Smith, f, dau., 4, scholar, b. Prestonpans
Charles Smith, m, son, 8 months, -, b. Prestonpans
Margret [sic] Craig, f, mother-in-law, 72, -, b. North Berwick

A submitted IGI entry shows David born 30th November 1852 (chr. 9th January 1853) in Prestonpans; parents Charles Smith and Jessie Craig.
