Fred Holt
« on: Thursday 24 May 12 21:39 BST (UK) »
Hi

I'm trying to research my great-grandfather. His name was Frederick Holt b.June 17 1889 (unsure where) d.1947 (unsure of date) Epping. I found a marriage listing for him and my great-grandmother, May Ablett, in sometime in 1918 in Tendring. They then went on to have 5 children. However I also have reason to believe he was possible married before, possibly whilst in the navy, before the first world war.

Can anyone shed any more light on this or maybe even help with the missing dates? Interestingly, the listing ofr his marriage in 1918 lists him as Frederick J P, but everywhere else just lists his first name...

Any help greatly appreciated, ta.

Hi

I think you need to get his marriage certificate as that will give his father's name, especially as you have no idea where he was born.

There are at least 15 Frederick Holts born about that time on the 1891 census. There is one born about 1890 in Hornchurch, Essex. His parents were Arthur and Emma and he had siblings Florence and Emma.   RG12; Piece: 1373; Folio: 32; Page: 13

This looks like that Frederick's birth, which fits with your Frederick

There is a naval service record that looks to be for him, in which he has given his place of birth as Brentwood:

Hi
These both look like him. Yes his parents were Arthur and Emma and he had several siblings.
It's interesting that I can find only find a listing for a Frederick Holt born in Romford yet his Naval records say Brentwood and other sources say Hornchurch...?

i hope this information will not be to upsetting, as i know myself when looking for relatives it can be quite a shock sometimes especially when the living relatives keep on about the good old days.

Fredrick holt was married before and the young lady he married was my granma and they was married on 14th August 1909 the wedding took place at the registry office in Chatham which i think he might have been based and serving on the HMS Trafalgar as a cooks mate. The 1911 census shows he was 21, married and his birthplace was harolds road, brentwood. the same year different place, but they got her down as a surname of Hole (the handwriting of a census has lot to be answered for) and she had a child but sadly did not survive and at the time was living with someone called eliza griggs who lived at 115 melrose avenue, crinklewood, could you expand this as i have no idea if the surname is correct or who they are? are they relatives of yours?. would you like some more information?

Hi
Many thanks for this. Do you have any photographs of Fred or any WW1 documents? Do you know anything else about him, ie what happened with his marriage to your grandma, where he served during the war, where he then lived, died etc?
