Taken from an October 1839 OPR Deaths St. Cuthbert's (685/02 0500 0523) - the "Weebine" is made up for comparison from  the script of the extract. Search based on the surnames and 1839 deaths in Edinburgh.

Thanks everyone for the input, Gilbert allegedly died 10 Sept 1839, so the October '39 entries are very close and also feasible.   Your suggestion that I have mis-read the writting to believe is was Weebine instead of Decline.   So my next question is this; how big a net did 'Decline' cover?   Given that Gilbert spent the bulk of his adult life, from 1794 to possibly 1838 in the West Indies / Berbice / Jamaica / Demeria Essequibo (forgive my spelling errors).    I imagine that after nearly 45 years in a temperate climate the return to Scotland would have been a serious shock to anyone's constitution.
Now all I have to do is continue searching through records I saved to my hard drive until I find the record I have lost.   I am going to have to start printing a hard copy of everything I have - no small exercise.

I'm not sure what "Decline" covered. As far as I know it was just a very general term maybe used in addition to another ailment, maybe a general term covering old age, and maybe if the medics weren't sure what the exact cause of death was ... (but these are only guesses) - I hope someone will be able to give you a better explanation.

Many deaths in this period and for some years yet were not certified and would have had no doctor in attendance. So general terms such as decline, senile decay to name a few would have been common.

I think 'decline' as a medical term in those times was a generic word, as implied, for a steady deterioration of some condition or illness.

Archaic  any slowly progressive disease, such as tuberculosis.

The Gilbert Robertson (Minister of the C of S) entry line has replaced my "Decline" and "Weebine"

I've come across the term "decline of nature" on DCs, applied to very elderly people.  Have always presumed that meant no particular ailment, just a combination of all that comes with old age.
