lots of townlands dont show up on Google maps...

What are the details of your reference for this townland ?
i.e. the civil registration district or parish etc

It's from Tithe Applotment  1823-1837 - reference is Old Rock, Cloonaghil, Sligo. Don't want to mention names at this time as it's a surprise for a friend who may just google her family name!

it's a civil parish...  from your reference I'd say the townland may be Old Rock

Google maps does much better if you start from somewhere nearby that it knows - i.e. in this case the town of Tobercurry..

  Tobercurry to Cloonoghill

I'll have a look for Oldrock townland...

Many thanks for your very swift reply Shane. I've just also found it on Griffiths Valuation as parish of Cloonaghil in the Barony of Corran. Also in the same area is Emlaghfad (Emlefad) which is what I was trying ascertain.

Your second reply just popped up - thanks.

Just add an "l" i.e. Cloonaghill!

Thanks for easy links - I now know that Carrigans Upper (in Emlaghfad parish) is not very far from Cloonaghil and I have located a possible death registered in Tobercurry so a very good evening's work. I've also found that there were 15 households of the name in Co. Sligo in 1858 which was 93.8% of the name in Ireland so locating the correct family may take some time.....
