Ticehurst family in Battle
« on: Wednesday 30 May 12 08:47 BST (UK) »
Hi,

I'd appreciate getting hold of any information on the Ticehurst family who lived in Battle at the end of the 18th century/early 19th century.  William Ticehurst was a local schoolmaster, married to Sophia, who had at least 5 children: William, Augusta, Thomas, Frederic and Francis William.  They lived in Langton House from about 1829.

Regards,
Chris

Hi,

Many thanks for this information.....extremely interesting.

My main focus up until recent has been the son of William & Sophia, also called William born 1794 in Battle who later became a sea captain in the East India Co.  William married Sarah Darby, daughter of William Darby and Sarah Drake of Chelmsford in Essex.  I'm now wondering if William Darby and Sophia Darby were related?

I have seen a very detailed obituary for a Francis William Ticehurst, born 1812 in Battle, son of William Ticehurst the schoolmaster.  The obituary confirms Captain William Ticehurst as one of the brothers.  Thomas and Frederic Ticehurst are also identified as brothers.  I've since established that Thomas was born in 1804 in Battle, Frederic born 1810 and Francis William born 1812.   From your information it therefore turns out that Captain William Ticehurst was the half-brother of the other three.

I would very much appreciate baptism dates for the children.  William was baptised 26/Sept/1794 at St Mary the Virgin Battle.  He had a sister Augusta baptised 6/Jan/1796 at St Mary the Virgin.  I don't have baptism dates for the other three sons, nor do I know if I've found all the children.

I greatly appreciate your help.

Regards,
Chris

That's fantastic...thank you.

I found the 1851 census return as well.

The name Rowland crops up elsewhere on a related part of my family tree.

Thanks again....yet more very useful information.

There's an interesting website at:
http://www.photohistory-sussex.co.uk/BattlePhotographers.htm
which talks about this family and Francis William's interest in photography.

Francis William died 11/Jul/1902 in Battle, presumably he was also buried at St Mary.  He and Jane had 11 children.  The youngest was indeed Arthur John Gorham Ticehurst.  His death was registered in Tonbridge, Kent.  Jane Frances was the first born child.

My 3rd great-grandmother was Elizabeth Darby who married Thomas Ward, a schoolmaster.   They lived in Olney and Stoney Stratford for a number of years before becoming insovent debtors and eventually living out the tail end of their lives in poverty in London. One of their children was named Rowland.  Elizabeth's sister was Sarah Darby who married William Ticehurst, Captain RN and East India Co.  I can't believe that Captain Ticehurst's mother was also a Darby....seems too much of a coincidence.

Chris
