1841 Census look-up Joan Davis/Davies.- Completed.
« on: Saturday 02 June 12 21:46 BST (UK) »
Looking for Joan Davis/ Davies born about 1830 Edinburgh, Father John Davies, Mother Maggie Laing Hunter Davies.  Joan married 4 April 1848 in Glasgow to Robert Ferguson.  I am trying to find out if Joan had any siblings, particularly Sisters.  Any help at all would be appreciated.  Sorry there is not too much to go on.  Thanks.

Hi JTN

There is this possible one for Joan in 1841

Joan Davis, 12, inmate, b. Midlothian - No address, just showing in Edinburgh Canongate.

Possibly a poor house? Long list of names, with a wide range of ages.

From Freecen www.freecen.org.uk/cgi/search.pl, there is also a 14 yr old James Davis showing on the list and a couple of Davidson.

Monica,
Thank you for this.  I have tried FreeCen a couple of tmes but keep getting "sorry no matches" so I am obviously not doing something right.  That seems to be a very good possibility so I will keep trying.

Monica,
P.S.  Sorry, I found it and it is designated as a "House of Refuge" just as you said.  I can only deduce from this that her parents were both deceased so will have to go after the Deaths of John & Maggie.  Thanks again.

Might be hard on the deaths for John and Maggie given it was before 1855 unfortunately.

What was John Davis' occupation? Might still be around in 1841 and depending on the occupation (if it is labourer, then unlikely!) we might find something.

Monica,
The only information I have on him is from the 1903 Death Certificate for Joan and that gives his occupation as Shoemaker.  Don't know if that would help!.

Can't see anything really fitting in the Midlothian area with that occupation for 1841, pity  :-\
