Bed Bose Meadow, Framlingham
« on: Sunday 03 June 12 08:45 BST (UK) »
Hi,
I am trying to locate the farm called Bed Bose Meadow owned by the Till family in the 1700's. Any ideas on a good map would be appreciated.
Thanks, Sue   :)

I would imagine that this is Red Rose Meadow - we do have a copy of the tithe map - but it's probably still packed in a box somewhere (we moved back home to Fram a few months ago).  ::)

I am on duty at The Castle Lanman Museum over the holiday weekend and involved in the Exhibition on old Framlingham (in St Michael's Rooms if anyone is in the area - Tuesday 10 - 4pm).
Will see if I can find anything in the museum to help further if no one comes up with a reply before then.

Dear Pat,
Thanks, any help would be great. The old writing is hard to read sometimes. I am in South Australia so a bit far to pop in to the museum this week!!! I have Framlingham connections via the Till and Scarce name until the late 1700's when the Scarce connection moved to Leiston.
Kind Regards, Sue :)

Have found a reference in my husband's copy of Green's History of Framlingham.  Will type it all out as soon as I get a minute.

The Meadow was thus called as the rent on it was a red rose once a year.  It looks as though the meadow belonged to Pembroke College in Cambridge (which has a long association with Framlingham).  It could be that the Till family were tenants at one time of day?

Will see what I can find  ;)

I have found a digitised version of Green's on line at

http://www.rootschat.com/links/0ncl/

You will need to start at page 172 and read through to page 176 which mentions Red Rose Meadow.

You will probably need to read a couple of pages after that to understand it all  ;)

'Lady Day' when the rent was due is one of the quarter days, and is on March 25th.

Now to see if I can find a suitable map  ::)

PS Gawin Till and Gawin Till Junior are mentioned on page 190 as Feoffees of the Town Lands.

Have found in notes from Fram churchyard

Gawin Till died/buried (not sure what the date actually means)
27th July 1763 age 70 years

Gawin Till 17th June 1801 age 36 years

Gawin Till 12th July 1807 age 69 years

Jane Till 7th January 1812 age 78 years

You may already have the information on these Framlingham Tills, if you would like, next time I am in the town on a sunny day - I will have a look for these headstones.  Can't guarantee that I will find them as the wording on many of the headstones has eroded.

Pat ...

PS the town is only a ten minute walk for me  ::)

Dear Pat,
Thank you for all the details you have sent me.
I did have the burial details and have spent ages sorting out which Gowen Till was which. The buried ones are Grandfather, father and son but not in that order. Gowen the father's wife was Jenny Goodwyn (a surname that appears often) and their daughter Jenny married Nathaniel Benington. I am not sure if the Jane is Jenny yet.
If you could find the time to photograph the tombstone I would be very grateful.
Kind Regards, Sue

The Goodwyn name is well known in Fram.
I can check amongst their headstones as there are a few Goodwyn ones, perhaps the Till family will be in the same area.
