John MARTYN b:1790
« on: Sunday 03 June 12 23:25 BST (UK) »
John Martyn b.1790
Married [1816/18] Charity Northey b 1801 d 1835
Children
John Martyn 1818
Silas Martyn 1822
Elizabeth Martyn 1827
Pricilla Martyn 1829

In 1841 census and onwards, indications he got married to a Jane [?] and had further children.

Trying to find records that confirm [a] his marriage to Charity his marriage to Jane [c] Jane's maiden name [d] who his father was. There are so many John Martyn's in Cornwall and have scrapped this area of my tree and started over after dead ends. Frustrated, can anyone help please?

My grateful thanks in advance for any ray of hope.

BIF

Thanks for your reply

The Cherry Norway record fits date-wise but I thought it prudent to ignore it as one might accept an error in transcribing of Cherry for Charity, but Norway for Northey?

Sort of mistake over the 'phone, with someone like me, who's hard of hearing, but as they didn't exist then, that's ruled that out.

Tried to trace any further info on Cherry, but zero.

Reaching for the wine bottle

Good health to you :)

Hi BIF,

Looking at the original images re this marriage I note both Banns and Marriage list Cherry NORTHEY of St Blazey

https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.3.1/TH-267-11110-174512-14?cc=1769414&wc=MMVH-VZR:1931644685

note Cherry NORWAY was illiterate (and not local)

could be of interest to note this baptism

Cherry NORTHEY 20 Feb 1801 Altarnun parents Wm and Elizabeth

http://www.cornwall-opc-database.org/search-database/more-info/?t=baptisms&id=2209848

I can find no other Charity/Cherry NORTHEY/NORWAY

The nonconformist records for the baptsisms of young Elizabeth and Priscilla MARTIN list their mother as Charity the daughter of William and Elizabeth NORTHY.

Cornwall Census is Free Online

In 1841 we find young Silas and Elizabeth residing with Joseph and Grace MARTIN at Boscundle. Their mother was buried 19 May 1835 aged 34 (residence Boscundle) Grace MARTIN is  nee NORTHEY from Altarnun.

Suspecting John and Joseph may have been brothers we have baptisms which appear to fit (to John and Mary)

Where do you have John and Jane 1841 onwards?

Cheers Kris  :)

Kris

Totally agree with everything you say as I have just been studying this family with another researcher.

We spent hours trying to find out where this particular branch of Martyns came from - do you remember I was asking you about the St Columb lot.

If you can find a marriage for John and Mary parents to John and Joseph who married the Northey girls then please tell me post haste.....

John and Joseph were nephews to Richard Martyn who bought land at Carthew and was indirectly responsible for the huge clay pits there eventually. (Wheal Martyn Museum at St Austell)

John and Priscilla died at Carthew and Charity at Boscundle pre 1841, so John and jane must be someone different.

Hi Fizzy,

Thanks for your search. I have, like you, waded through the Martyns, however, I find that my John married a Jane in 1837, which would be 2 years after Charity's death in 1835 aged 34.

There was a William on the 1851 Census, listed as born 1835 and he must have been the last of Charity's children - perhaps Charity died in childbirth(?)

1861 aged 61, he is living with William and his wife, listed as a boarder and also a widower.

Been trying to identify Jane as to her maiden name etc etc, but to date no luck.

However, my priority is to find John's parents.

Onward and upward, as they say.

If you know of a marriage in 1837 of John and Jane, surely her maiden name will be there ?

How do you conclude that William was born to John and Charity ?
