Probate in Derbyshire
« on: Monday 04 June 12 06:34 BST (UK) »
Could some one please advise me where I can access the probate records for Derbyshire.

My grandfather died there in 1974, after living in a retirement home since 1966 (at least). He wrote, or rewrote his will there on 22 Jan 1974, and died some six months later. I have a copy of the death certificate, but would like to find out where and when probate was granted.

As I am in Australia, I cannot visit any records office, but just need steering in the right direction.

Hi

The link below has information about probate records. Unfortunately the Probate Calendars are only online (on Ancestry) until 1966 so you would need someone to look up the Calendar at a Probate Registry to see if it went to Probate. The link also has information about applying for a copy.

Thanks for the prompt response Andy.

I will have to think about what to do next, but at least I now know where to start.

Again, thank you

Hi,
You could write to the following :
Probate Registry (High Court of Justice),
Nottingham Probate Sub-Registry,
Butt Dyke House,
Park Row,
Nottingham,
Tel. No. 0115 941 4288.
I have always found the staff there very helpful.   Worth a try.

Thank you very much for that information Aquilegia18
I will make a note of that address, and see about writing. Due to time differences, ringing is not usually feasible, with me being awake when they are asleep, and vice versa ::)

Again many thanks

You are very welcome.
The last Will I bought from Nottingham cost me £5.00 UK but you would need to check the cost with the Probate Registry.
Good luck.

Hi,
So sorry but Nottingham Probate Registry closed for now.   I have recently applied for probates and was advised to send to the following:

Leeds District Probate Registry,   Postal Search Department,
York House, York Street, Leeds, LS1 2BA.
The cost has increased to £6.00 per item.
