Jane Quayle b Peel abt 1840
« on: Tuesday 05 June 12 10:16 BST (UK) »
Hi

I am looking for some information about Jane Quayle who was born in Peel about 1840.  Her parents were William Quayle born in Peel in 1797 (he was a mariner) and Eleanor Callin born about 1801 in Patrick.  Jane had an illegitimate son - William in 1866.  I would really like to find out who is father was, but I seem to have hit a wall, and I'm not sure where to look next.  Jane never married and had no more children.

I can't find Jane on the 1851 and 1861 censuses, but by 1871 she was a dressmaker living with her parents and younger brother in Kirk German.  Jane's sister Ann was in service and I wonder if Jane had been too.

There is a rumour in our family that William's father was the Earl of Derby (I don't know which one!) and that perhaps Jane had been a servant in his household.  There may or may not be any truth in this, but I would like to try to find out either way!

Jane's family was poor, but William was educated (again the rumour was that it was at King's School??) and he became a schoolmaster.  He moved first to Liverpool and then to South Wales.  He was fairly well off when he died.  There does seem to be some suggestion here that William had someone wealthy behind him.

Any assistance anyone can give would be much appreciated.... Thanks.

In 1851 ony William and Joseph are in Shore Lane,  German HO107/2523/~F123 p41
William, Eleanor and Joseph in 1861 is on RG9/4428/~F13 p17 on Shore Street, German

so where are the others, how frustrating for you, I'll keep trying...

Yes, it is frustrating.  I've struggled to find the rest of the family in 1851 too.  I do appreciate your help - thank you!

and a possible sighting in 1861 servant/nurse with John Garvell/Gerviss? (a draper) and family in Church Street, Southport , Lancashire, she's born Isle of Man.  A fairly wealthy family I think, his wife describes herself as lady....  there's a monthly nurse,  another servant and Jane with the family.   Maybe John is the unknown father.  Could someone check for a support order?

Hope this helps

dau ellinor is a servant at a neighours house in 1851 - strange that the mother is missing - I can't see an obvious match - possibly visiting with her mother ? the boys are probably away fishing
