DUGGAN & KEEGAN
« on: Thursday 07 June 12 22:29 BST (UK) »
I am looking for information on Timothy DUGGAN and Judith / Judy KEEGAN (also spelt KEAGAN).  They would have married probably around 1790-1795.

Timothy & Judy had the following children:
Margaret b. 1796
Honor b. 1799
Anne b. 1801
Mary b. 1805
Andrew b. 1810
Judy - unknown dob
Minny - unknown dob
(most of the baptisms I have found in the region of Aghaboe Parish and/or Borris-in-Ossory)

Andrew was convicted of larceny in 1845 and transported to Australia.  He later married and settled in NZ.  I have quite a bit of information about Andrew once he arrived in NZ, but nothing at all up to his conviction in 1845.

I don't know anything further about the rest of the children, though I suspect that Timothy, Judith (the mother) and the daughter Honor may have died prior to 1845 as they aren't listed as next of kin on Andrew's documents.

Any assistance in tracing this family is greatly appreciated!

You didn't mention the denomination of your Duggan & Keegan families, or where you've already tried searching - i.e. RC microfilms, FamilySearch, RootsIreland etc..

RC records for Borris-in-Ossory parish go back to 1840. Aghaboe parish is to the south west of this and has coverage back to the 1790s.

RC registers dont usually include death/burials.

As far as I can tell, the family were Roman Catholic.

The information has been gathered from a number of sources - including the RootsIreland website, a LDS film from Aghaboe parish (film #0979700) and some transcriptions of documents relating to Andrew's transportation.

Edited to add:
Given the baptisms that were found in the Aghaboe Parish, I think the family were there originally, however Andrew's death notice referred to him as a "native of Borris-in-Ossory" so it seems he identified particularly with that location.

If you are aiming to trace forward for later details of Andrew's siblings, then I think a further search of the parish records is the way to proceed. Do any of the records you have found so far mention a townland ?

just saw your edit - unfortunately the Borris-in-Ossory RC records dont go back as far as the ones for Aghaboe. Few rural RC parishes have records before 1830, so you were quite lucky with Aghaboe..

I would guess that the 'Borris-in-Ossory' reference would probably refer to the town...  narrows down his location a little

The writing on the baptisms was incredibly hard to read, and the spelling varied greatly, but on Honor's baptism it appears the townland named was Ballygarvin.

There's a townland name 'Ballygarvan Glebe' in Aghaboe civil parish. It consists of about 298 acres.

Aghaboe RC parish covered about 5 civil parishes - all in Co. Laois.

Aghaboe, Bordwell, Coolkerry, Kildellig and Killermogh

There are several entries for the surname Duigan in the townland on Griffith's Valuation - maybe a variation of Duggan ?

  Ballygarvan Glebe - Griffith's

The year for this section of the Valuation is 1850.

I have found some possible information about Judy Duggan (the daughter) on FindMyPast.ie

There is an entry on the Queen's Co Prison General Register (1853-1866) for a Judith Duggan, age 56, can read, RC, committed to the Lunatic Asylum in April/May 1859 as a "dangerous lunatic".

Does anyone know of any way of finding out anything further about this entry?
